Yes, it's been a while. My hard drive crashed and it took me a while to get it repaired. In the meantime, I got a lot of studying done. Now, it's time to be inefficient again.
I got the laptop up and running just in time for the NFL draft. Checking wap.espn.com on my cellphone is just not the same as the real thing. It was only good for checking up on how the Bulls were doing. As it turned out, a lot better than I thought.
Now, back to the draft. So, two weeks ago when I was up to date, Reggie Bush was a lock for the #1 pick and then, the 3 QBs would go very high in the draft. A logical person would probably rank them Leinart, Young, Cutler. I thought that Cutler was a better pick than Young, but that's not that big a deal.
So with the first pick, the Houston Texans select DE Mario Williams from NC State. Great choice Houston. I was checking away messages and I ran across one which equated the Texans to someone mentally challenged. His logic seemed flawed since the Houston Texans have proven that they are not just mentally challenged, they are braindead. They have a guy at GM who knows he's going to get fired. So, they decide to draft a guy who had most of his sacks against much lesser opponents. This guy does not seem like a worthy #1 pick, especially over a stud like Bush. Come on!!! That franchise is really this bad. All they need now is to hire Matt Millen as GM and give the coaching job to Dave Wannstedt.
Then, you look at the Tennesee Titans. After struggling the last few years, they decided to hire Norm Chow to revamp their offense. His system didn't work too well with McNair because he's not really the prototypical passer. He's more of a speed guy who likes to run a lot. Since the Titans are a smart team, they decided to draft Matt Leinart who enjoyed quite a bit of success running Chow's system. He will also have an easier time running Chow's offense because he, as a QB, probably knows it better than anyone else. Wait, they didn't choose Leinart? Vince Young? But Vince Young is pretty much a less talented Michael Vick and built from the same mold as McNair who's play didn't fit the system. Have fun rebuilding for 10 more years. Maybe you can screw up next year's draft too since you will surely be getting another pretty high pick.
Even though the money isn't that great, both Leinart and Cutler ended up in great positions. Leinart gets to play in warm Arizona. He has a great coach in Denny Green and can learn under Kurt Warner who served as a mentor to Eli Manning as a rookie as well. Add Edgerrin James as RB and the beautiful Arizona weather, Matt Leinart should be pretty happy. Sure it would have been prestigious to get picked higher, but it's more important to land in a good situation. Marino and Roethlisberger both excelled as rookies because they were drafted late with teams with good core players.
Cutler can look at Leinart's situation and can still enjoy his fortunes. Mike Shanahan is a hell of a coach and he hasn't had a talent like Cutler since Elway left. He made good use of the ungifted Brian Griese and has helped Jake Plummer resurrect his career. Cutler will taste something very new after a long time as well. Being part of a team that is good. Vanderbilt sucks. He was the only reason they did anything. Now surrounded by players with actual talent, the sky's the limit; especially given his situation. With all that he has going for him, Cutler still looks inbred. Hopefully that money will lure some woman who is more interested in his money than his looks. |
